I guess it tells you how busy I’ve been that I haven’t had a chance to update this site and the blog until now with a publication I’m entirely thrilled about. I published my dystopian SF story “Broken” at Clarkesworld.
The story was a challenge to write because, from the start, the chronology, as one reads, progresses from the most recent moment to the least recent. This creates certain complications in terms of story structure. I still wanted the story to build to some kind of climactic moment, even if the reader has a sense of the reveal before reaching that moment. In essence, the story becomes less about what happened and more about what the POV character feels or thinks about it, in comparison or contrast to the reader.
It isn’t the only story in the issue that explores what reality is, what matters when perception can be entirely manipulated. I suppose this preoccupation by creators says a lot about the times we’re living in.
